Just finished listening to the audio book edition of “Quantum: Einstein, Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality” by Manjit Kumar. I don’t pretend to understand quantum theory to any real depth. I found I understood the issues discussed in this book if not necessarily all of the theory and math. What is fascinating is the give and take between two of the greatest minds of the 20th Century and the results of the great debate they held over the years. Bohr’s theory held sway for many years and for several generations of physicists. Eventually, new research and new theories provided reasons for reevaluating Bohr’s theory and accepting many of Einstein’s ideas. The result is a new theory combining both ideas and leaving open for more growth and research in quantum theory. The results are just now starting to be seen in new areas such as quantum cryptography and the actual construction of quantum computers. The idea of many universes is now widely accepted. It will be interesting to see what else comes of the very weird and bizarre world of quantum theory.
