Chapter 2 – Online Databases

Locating databases related to agriculture can be frustrating.  There are very few critical reviews in the literature other than  reviews of AGRICOLA and occasionally one of the other large databases.  The following publications are useful in locating agricultural databases.

Directories:  These are available at most large college or university libraries.

Data base directory; White Plains, N.Y. :Knowledge Industry .  This publication has a good subject break down of databases.

Gale directory of databases. Detroit : Gale Research Inc.

Directory of United Nations databases and information systems; New York : United Nations.

Many of the databases  listed in this publication are hard to get.  I found the descriptions wanting.

Periodicals:These are available at most large college or university libraries.

Quarterly Bulletin of the International Association of Agricultural Information Specialists(IAALD);  The Association.  This publication is of primary interest to information specialists.  It is indexed in AGRICOLA and other places.  It is available in large agricultural libraries.

Journal of Agricultural & Food Information; Binghamton, NY: Haworth Press.  This new publication contains many articles of interest about agricultural databases.  It is aimed at the information provider.   It is indexed in AGRICOLA and  CAB Abstracts.

Databases of Databases:

DIALINDEX; DIALOG Information Services.  This database provides the number of postings for a search statement for each of the specified databases.   Costs: $.75 per connect minute.

Also, check vendors catalogs for the latest information.  All vendors are very willing to send out their catlogs and pricing information.

There are many vendors that sell or provide agricultural related online information.  The major ones in North America are DIALOG, BRS, and CAN/OLE.  DIALOG provides by far the greatest number of databases related to agriculture.  BRS concentrates on medical information while CAN/OLE provides several major databases.

The databases selected for inclusion here are by no means the only ones related to agriculture or the only ones of use to practitioners.  The major vendors offer other services that could be useful.  Write the vendors for information about their services.  DIALOG, BRS, and OCLC are available via the world wide internet.  CAN/OLE is also available via the internet and canadian networks to Canadian subscribers only.

The databases in this section are the major agricultural databases  available and are directly concerned with agriculture.  Others may have included more or less, the selection tends to be some what subjective.  I intentionally excluded those that deal solely with biotechnology or food sciences.  The majority of these databases are available around the world via the internet or local offices of the vendors.
